The high school application process can be confusing, especially with all the myths and misconceptions floating around. Let’s break down some of the most common ones to uncover the facts, particularly for grade-8 students applying to schools in Canada.
Myth #1: "Never mind the program. Just use it to get into a good school."
Truth: Finding a program that suits your interests and strengths is key to your success, both in high school and beyond. A good fit will help you thrive academically and personally. It'll give you better overall high-school experience and also open future opportunities.
Myth #2: "Always go for STEM because that’s where the jobs will be."
Truth: While STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) is growing in demand, there are many pathways from education to employment. Non-STEM fields also offer a variety of promising career opportunities. Lawyers, policy advisors, economists, and designers are just a few examples. What matters most is choosing a field that aligns with your passion and strengths, so that you’re most likely to enjoy what you do and excel at it.
Myth #3: "Go where my friends go."
Truth: High school is an opportunity to grow yourself, even if that means getting out of your comfort zone and being away from your old friends. Also, high school clubs and student organization offer great opportunities to meet like-minded peers and make new friends. Going to a school that’s a good fit will help with your social life as well.
Myth #4: "Unless I want to become a professional artist or athlete, arts or athletics programs won’t help me."
Truth: Many students in arts or athletics programs do not go on to pursue these fields professionally, but these programs still provide valuable skills that enhance university applications. Universities are looking for well-rounded applicants with diverse skills, including those gained through arts and athletics.
Myth #5: "International Baccalaureate (IB) is more prestigious than other programs."
Truth: The IB program is not about prestige. While it offers rigorous academic challenges, universities care more about individual performance and qualities than simply attending an IB program. If you hate writing or public speaking or dislike French, reconsider your choice, as these are key components in IB.
Myth #6: "School ranking is the most important factor for choosing a high school."
Truth: School rankings are based primarily on standardized test scores (e.g., EQAO results in Ontario). However, some excellent programs are offered at schools that don’t top the rankings. It’s important to look beyond rankings and find the best program for yourself.
Myth #7: "Catholic high schools are only for Catholic students."
Truth: Catholic high schools welcome non-Catholic students. They do not require students to convert or practice Catholic rituals, and many non-Catholic students attend these schools.
Myth #8: "Private schools are for rich kids only, and it’s too late to switch to a private school in grade 9."
Truth: Many private schools offer financial aid to families in need, and it’s quite common for students to choose to transfer to private schools starting grade 9. If a private school aligns with your goals, it’s worth exploring regardless of your financial background.
Myth #9: "Open houses are a waste of time."
Truth: Attending open houses is a crucial part of the high school application process. These events offer insights you can’t gain from brochures or websites, giving you a clearer picture of the school environment and helping you make an informed decision. Among other things, you’ll get to speak directly to current students and hear about their first-hand experience of their schools.
Good luck with your applications!
